Assignment 1 - Postponed

Dear students,

My apologies but it looks like most of you are still not aware of Assignment 1. To be fair, I shall cancel the Assignment for now and just start it officially next week. So yes, please proceed to focus on your Final Project development sketches and we shall begin Assignment 1 only next week.

My mistake.

All the best!

Assignment 1: Interesting Study

Just for some starters to Assignment 1, here are some pointers for you.

1. Make a word grow or shrink.
2. Apply contrasts
3. Apply Figure and Ground reversals
4. Experiment with opposite meanings if it helps convey your message ie: Expressing the word BIG in really small type.
5. Play with really extremely large type size.
6. Play with really small type size.
7. Break horizontal text linings.
8. Break words apart.
9. Apply ligatures (character consisting of two or more letters combined into one)
10. Use type as texture/bg

On the other hand, do check out the work of Reid Miles too. He designed for many Jazz labels and was very inventive in his use of type.

Lastly, keep in mind once again that for this assignment, no image is allowed yea.

Have a blast!

Assignment 1: Crit Requirements Next Week (28/4)

With regards to Assignment 1, my sincere thanks goes to Kaelvin and gang for helping me pass the word and brief to the class. I apologize for leaving that out. Meanwhile, I do hope that most of you understand the requirements to the project.

It is basically a 2 week project and is very similar to the exercise 1 you did in class on Expressive Type, except perhaps more elaborate and expressive. I will be taking some time off this week to analyze your submissions in hopes to provide some feedback to you all next week. Most were pretty interesting but I did notice a few students using image to help in the expression (which by the way is not allowed in your Assignment 1) . Nonetheless, having a little more time with Assignment 1 as compared to the exercise in class, I believe more interesting stuff will come out of you all yea ;) Do have fun with it too.

Anyways, please do write me if you've got any uncertainties about the project.

As for next week, I know I told Kaelvin that you can just do some tryouts on the computer and show me your work-in-progress. But having weighed the intensity of the Assignment, I am hereby making it compulsory that you must show me at least:

2 tryouts for each composition (ie: 2 b/w and 2 colour) for next week's class alongside your typeface design sketches.

Knowing that this Assignment is worth 20% of your subject, I think its better to do a progress for it too. So yes, do well there and experiment as much as you can.

Take care

DCM05/DGD03 Typography Class Group

Dear Students,

I've set up a temporary blog for the class so that I can paste up any important announcements or information for all of you here. I realized that this might perhaps be a better way to communicate with the 18 of you guys without missing any of you out. Please do check this site at least once a week and preferably before the week ends or before the next class.

All critiques and feedback session on work will still be based in class. Meanwhile, do direct all queries to my hotmail account given previously in class.

Thank you and see you all again soon!
